The old city of Leiden is build on a mod hill where the rivers Old Rhine and New Rhine converge. In 1047 Leiden was looted and beseiged before it became the prosperous clothing city it is renowned for. In 1574 the inhabitants received an university or exemption from tax as a reward for the resistance against the Spaniards. They choose the first option.
Leiden is still know for it’s bruising university crowds and students.
Leiden not only is a city with interesting buildings, it also has a nice town center with interesting shops, a lot of good places to eat and drink.
